1. Introduction
The Society of Actuaries (SOA) is the largest actuarial association in North America. It administers a series of courses leading to Associateship and Fellowship.
2. Admission to Associateship
Who may be admitted
Anyone pursuing actuarial studies may apply for admission to the SOA. After the candidate completing the associateship educational requirements prescribed by the Board of Governors (BOG), the candidate will be enrolled as an Associate of the SOA (ASA), subject to approval and any further requirements that the BOG may prescribe.
When and how to apply
A candidate planning to seek admission to the SOA should submit the Application for Admission as Associate before completing the educational requirements for Associateship. The application form is separate from the candidate's course registration application and will be sent to candidates who have passed Courses 1-
Associateship Requirements
To attain Associateship, the candidate must successfully complete Courses 1-6 and the Associateship Professhionalism Course, and must have the Application for Admission as an Associate approved by the SOA Board of Governors. These requirements became effective January 1 2000. Any candidates who was not an Associate as of January 1, 2000 is subject to these requirements
3. Admission to Fellowship
An Associate will be admitted as a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries after completing the Fellowship educational requirements, including the Professional Development requirement, the Fellowship Admission Course, and any additional requirements prescribed by the BOG. No application is required for an Associate to be admitted as a Fellow.
Fellowship Requirements
Fellowship examination requirements include successfully completing Course 7 and Course 8 (where candidates must choose one of six practice-specific exams). The FAC is required of all candidates for Fellowship, and candidates may not attend the FAC until they have completed Course 1-8 and the PD requirement.
